Not good for tomato sauce

Duke the home canner 9/8/2017

Purchased this earlier in the year to help with canning this year. Was looking forward to no longer blanching/peeling/coring tomatoes. Unfortunately due to the screen size, all I got was tomato juice. The vast majority of the pulp went out the trash exit, not into the usable bowl. also, whenyou look down the input these is a visible gap where hte corkscrew ends and the drive end, that is space that could be eliminated with a better design. Kitchenaid should offer screens of varying sizes to allow the consumer to determine which size works best for their intended purpose. Good news is it works great as a juicer. I'll try grapes in the near future for making jelly.

Not what I was expecting

tmbirdsall 3/11/2017

The instructions are minimal at best. I put it together and started to use it to make applesauce. 'It's easy!' they said, "Super fast!" they said. There was no direction to use a 2nd bowl to catch the dried pulp and seeds at the end of the strainer. Next thing I know, there's a mess all over my counter. Then nothing was coming out anylonger. The end of the strainer was completely plugged up and I had put less than 2 pints jars worth of cooked down apples through. With a mess on my counter and the strainer not working, I called it quits. What would normally have taken me 5 minutes to make and another 5 to clean up with a hand cranked food mill took over 1/2 hour with this gadget. There was wasted applesauce. I wouldn't gift this to someone I really disliked.

Great for fruit but purchase a spare shaft for heavy usage

Jesse 2/25/2017

Bought this last year pre-harvest season and was very impressed on how it could handle tomatoes, pears and apples. Pears and apples need to be blanched to soften them up a bit but they go right through. With 5 gallons of fruit, I end up with only about 3-4 cups of waste. Probably 5 times more efficient than anything else I've used, and completed in 1/4 of the time. Granted I send the fruit through the processor 3 times to get as much juice and solids out of fruit as possible. With this I've done ~60 quarts of pear sauce, 50 quarts of apple sauce and at least 300 quarts of tomato based sauce's and soups. Unfortunately today the shaft broke in half and now I'm stuck with my last 9 gallons of pears to process and needing to wait a couple days for a new shaft. Note I gave the design a 3 rather than lower because I don't know the duty cycles the parts were engineered towards and I probably exceeded them. As an engineer I know the balance of designing parts as robust as possible, for the 99 percentile user, while management tries to reduce cost and reducing the robustness to say the 90 percentile user.

Excellent investment!

Vic 12/3/2016

I've had this for years and while a bit cumbersome to assemble, I wouldn't change a thing. It makes short work of the bushels of tomatoes we harvest every year & applesauce is a breeze. Only had an issue with clogging once & that was my fault for jamming some garlic necks in it.

What a mess

Old fashioned guy 10/29/2016

While using this very highly anticipated attachment to process home grown blackberries for jam... The ring gave way and the strainer cone, worm, ring and strainer tray flew across the room and my wall was covered with blackberry pulp. Glad I was not standing in the way. Not sure what happened because the ring was on tight. Apparently, after straining maybe a quart of berries, the cone got clogged with seeds and pressure built up. I was standing there and watching seeds come out the whole time, so never knew a clog was forming. Now the strainer tray is broken and I am afraid to use this anymore, especially around my young children.

Worked as advertised, very simple and efficient

Square footer 10/1/2016

Just used this to strain a small batch of tomatoes. My garden isn't large enough to get enough tomatoes all at once, so I strain and freeze until there's enough to can a few quarts. It took longer to set up than it did to do the straining. Cleanup was a breeze. Those who say it's tough to clean, dont let it set. A stream of water and a small bottle brush does the trick. Looking forward to trying it with applesauce.

Works great.....but...

Sarah's Gram 9/8/2016

I have been using my fruit and vegetable strainer mainly for pureeing tomatoes, for at least 15 years. It makes this chore a whole lot easier than using a hand strainer. Every time I use it I notice some of the juice goes back down the shaft of the strainer. I notice that on new vegetable strainer attachments, the shaft assembly has an "O" ring built into it, which mine does not have. Is this the reason the liquid leaks back into the motor area? Previously, I usually turned the mixer on end so the attachment hole faces down to drain any juice out, however, this year it seems that the juice may have gotten into the motor area because now the mixer does not work and I have to bring it to a repair facility (Marbeck in Kansas City, MO.). I have a Model #KP2671XGR Serial #WP1705892 that I've had since 2003. It gets quite a bit of use, mostly baking cookies, muffins, cakes, etc. I have tried to find this part to replace mine but have not been successful. Is my only alternative to buy the whole attachment, which I don't need because the rest of mine is still in excellent condition?

Disappointed

Mae 9/1/2016

I was happy that I thought I found a replacement to my old Oster Power Puree 'n Ricer that attached to my Oster Kitchen Center. The Kitchen Aid Fruit/Vegetable Strainer Attachment did a very satisfactory job. I canned many jars of tomato juice and applesauce with good results. However, when I cleaned up I found that the cleaning out the strainer cone was a pain. The fibers from the tomatoes and apples didn't want to come off. Then I discovered that worm had a hollow center that was impossible to clean out. I just spent an hour poking in and out with the smallest brushes I owned. Then using my sink sprayer to "power" spray through the center. What came out was yucky brown stuff. Makes me wonder if it was old food from last season. I am very concerned about using this attachment.

Great for home canning!

Adam G. 8/30/2016

I inherited mine from my grandmother, we have used it every year for at least 10 years to can 30+ Qtrs. of tomato sauce and 200+ Pts. of apple sauce. I run everything through at least twice, you do have to disassemble it and clean it about every half bushel but at that point I need a break any way.

Vegetable strainer

skeeter 7/19/2016

The strainer worked ok with the first batch of tomatoes. It helps to cook them a bit unless all are very ripe. We have used a squeezo for years with no troubles bur using this on the 2nd batch of cooked tomatoes the screen just broke apart. We were looking forward to doing Raspberries but doubt the plastic will hold up to them either

The Best Attachment EVER!!!

Chuck 7/4/2016

I've used this attachment for years to make jellies. I don't even hull strawberries anymore. Wash them and throw them in! Cherries? No problem. Pull the stems, pit them, and throw them in. And I send them through twice! I make Balsamic strawberry and cherry jam for the whole family. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, they all go through. If you can jellies and jams and you own a Kitchenaid, this is a "must have" attachment!

Applesauce, berries, tomato sauce

HealthyEater 9/26/2015

I've had mine for over 10 years and have used it to make tomato sauce, apple & pear sauces, for removing seeds from blackberries, raspberries. Other than berries, I usually run the eliminated skins, etc. through a 2nd time which reduces that bulk by half again. Do NOT try to run berries through it twice as it could damage the machine.

I love this attachment!

saraccc 10/17/2013

I don't know how I did without this attachment as long as I did. I used to use a juicer to make tomato juice and I would have to put the pulp it ejected through a food mill after that. Once through is all you need with this attachment. All you have left is the skin and seeds that it spits out! It's also great to process apples for applesauce! You just quarter them, put them in a pot with a little water, cook them till they're soft, then put them through the strainer!

Good with tomatoes. Not good with blackberries. Constantly getting clogged and takes more time to clean out than it takes to strain the berries.
